Jeanie asks… Dear Urinal: My roommate is a total bitch about her superiority complex over being from Jersey. How do I get her to stfu?
see, this is why south jersey tried to secede in the 70s: from trenton north blows. too many guidos, too much white trash, and too much ‘jer-z’ pride.
thats why when you ask a south jersyite where theyre from, they always say ’south jersey’ or ‘east of philly’ or something like that. were embarrassed by the rest of the state. its like that cousin youre ashamed to share a last name with; you know, the slutty one with a criminal record.
@ryko Washington is the same way. Had to move to Seattle for work, and I swear, you can just flush the west side of the state! It’s 2 totally different worlds. And the politics of the state can be precisely divided by the Cascade mountains. So basically, anything the west side of the state wants, the east side just has to accept. It sucks!
I am from NJ and the reason we’re a little defensive about our state is because everyone is so down on it. I lived through college having my home state referred to as “the toxic waste douche bag state”, so yeah, we get a little fierce in defending it. I did move away, and I love living in SC, but there are some good things about living in NJ. I’ll try not to sound too bitchy about it, since I know there are some pretty shitty areas of the state I’m glad I never had to spend much time in.
We have a really good public education system. There’s tons of great shopping (cliche I know, but true). We have some first rate off-Broadway theater. Tons of charming downtowns with revolutionary war history to them. There is beautiful horse country in the western part of the state. Parts of the Jersey Shore are really nice (It’s a shame there’s only parts, but when you cram that many people into such a small area there is going to be crappy areas).
To be fair, there is Newark, Atlantic City, the Oranges, some of the Plainfields, Route 22, Hwy 1-9, Jug Handles and a bunch of other annoying things about the state. I think since it’s so crammed people tend to only see the bad stuff.
I’m from Texas originally, but my family moved to South Jersey when my dad got a job in Philly. Lived here for 20 years, and found that there are good parts and bad parts. Anything north of Trenton (With Trenton included) is full of Tony Soprano wannabe’s, rich spoiled kids who laugh at your car if it isn’t from Germany, or little princesses who’s daddy buys em everything. I went to Camden County College, and had a kid originally from North Jersey (Clinton area) who’s dad bought him a Mercedes CLK-320, with heated and cooled seats, and had to get a ride from dad for a week cause his, and I quote, Air Conditioned Seats were broken.
There are good things to New Jersey, if you don’t like crowds and congested roads. Rt 42 to the Atlantic City Expressway may be the fastest way to get to the Shore Points, but I will NEVER get on the AC Expressway. I take Rt 55 to 47, and hit Rt 9. More scenic, less morons, less hassle. You want a nice, calm day at the beach? Hit Island Beach State Park instead of Wildwood. Try some hiking or camping, even fishing. If you like shopping, stay in Central or South Jersey. If you like to drive, bring a GPS, but don’t turn it on. Just cruise the farmland and backroads, then when you wanna get home, turn it on.
So yeah, NJ isn’t the WORST place to be by far, but I can agree that it isn’t the destination to aim for. So if you find yourself forced to be here, make the best of it. If not…. Meh
@Dan
I live in North Jersey, and I will admit there are some rich towns like Franklin Lakes, but most of the towns are like southern Jersey. They are very suburban and wooded, the only differrnce is the towns are hillier up here. Most of the families are middle class. And as you get toarwed Sussex, it gets more rural. As you get toarwed the Hudson, it gets more urban. North Jersey is just as nice as South Jersey. And on the note of shopping, North Jersey has great shopping. Willowbrook Mall, Garden State Plaza, Bridgewater Mall, the upcoming Meadowlands Xanadu, Harmon Meadow.
I grew up on the NJ shore (PtPleasant) and I’m trying as hard as I can to get back. There are crappy things about NJ, it’s expensive and there are a ton of guidos up north but really I miss all the variety. You can get almost any foreign food, and its a short drive to cities, beach, farmland, shopping, hiking, even (sub standard, I’ll admit) skiing. I’m living in North east PA right now and sometimes I feel like I could cut somebody for a decent slice of Pizza or a well made falafel.
I moved to New Jersey about three years ago from Atlanta. This place sucks! They are stuck in the 80’s, at least 6-8 weeks behind in music, have to plan all week long just to go to wal-mart, and take a week “vacation” at the beach that is only 2 hours from their freakin homes!!!! 98% of the state is trash. You can’t take a left…you have to drive 2 miles out of your way, take a right…drive another 2 miles to the light, then go back the way you came! The education up here is awful! The high school seniors are on the same grade level as most 8th graders in any other state. And manors? I’ve almost forgotten what it’s like to be spoken to in a respectful manor, such as yes mam, and god forbid one of the jack asses around here hold the damn door for some one, or actually stop hold the door and wait for the woman to go through the door before he walks in!
i live in north jersey. I’m only a half hour from newark. yes, there are a crapload of guidos and people from the above descriptions. Yes they are so very, very annoying and i can proudly say that I’m not one of them. however. it is not bad at all. of course i decided to got to a boarding school just south of trenton so I’ve escaped before i got to the real problem of high school with guidos and guidettes
I used to live in New Jersey (West Milford, to be specific), before my family moved south. I have wished so many times that I could be back in New Jersey.
SilverC, it’s “manner,” not “manor.” The latter would refer to a house. And I don’t know who you’re kidding about New Jersey’s education. New Jersey’s educational effectiveness is 5th in the nation, ranked with an A, as opposed to Georgia, who received a D, and ranked 39th. http://www.uschamber.com/icw/reportcard/default
Compared to where I’ve been stuck for the last decade, New Jersey is richer, smarter, and thinner. And I don’t want to hear about arrogant Jersey kids, because I’m stuck in the heart of the bible belt, where they would love to tell you about why it’s the best area in the world, despite literally never having left it for so much as a vacation.
Um..I think you mean “manners”, not “manors” (a giant house in Great Britain). So maybe your public school wasn’t so hot…I seriously doubt GA has a better public school system than Jersey. And your manners complaint go far ALL of the Northeast. Boohoo.
I’ve lived all my life in Jersey, and I’m looking to leave as soon as I can. But as far as a place to grow up, it was pretty great. I grew up with the advantage of having New York and Philly all within an hour’s drive, and Washington and Boston relatively close by. Great pizza. Great shopping. A diverse mix of people. I had access to great museums, libraries, cultural events, historical sites etc. For the curious mind, it’s a great place to experience your formative years. But now that I’m in my 30s, it’s crowded, polluted and expensive. I’m getting out, but I’ll always be fond of my home state.
LOL to all the comments, i’m glad to see other defending the North/South thing.
I grew up down the shore (The Villas). Moved up toward Philly (Runnemede) after that. Just moved to Florida two years ago and while i love Fl, i do miss so much about NJ.
Being just a few miles from Philly, A/C, the shore….
I lived in jersey, they all have this horrible accent that if you from anywhere else you can hardly stand. They pronounce Water as wuter and it gets beyond annoying.
@MassHole
Ok. So there’s a typo. Big deal. One person does not represent the entire school system. And do my complaints really go *FAR*? Or may be you meant to say *FOR*? Oh and there are Manors (the giant houses) Here in the US too.
Come to Australia its the BOMB. Beaches not b*tches, standard of living is amazing, unless you live in some regional sh*thole where people are time sharing a brain cell… oh wait…
@ryko: Funny, North Jersey feels the same way about South Jersey. I actually do believe Jersey is “two states”.
I grew up in a little upper middle class town in NJ. The town would have been great, problem was the snobby guidos. I left Jersey for college and only go back to visit my friends and parents. Many of the people in Jersey suck but the state itself is beautiful. And it only smells because of the New Yorkers throwing their trash in the Hudson. No one cares that the city smells, just the towns in Jersey…go figure.
Then why don’t you go back to bum-f*** Georgia and stop crying. You come from Alabama and you wanna say Jersey is bad? Yeah, take a look at the people down there. Unless you’re in Camden or Newark you don’t need to be comparing your situation to Atlanta. Home of most of the Southern Rappers, and we see how they act. Behind in music? Where the HELL in Jersey are you? You picked a really shitty part. Jersey makes you tough. Not some whiny b**** like you obviously are. I hold the door for people. But as far as “ma’am”, nah, sorry. You must be in some place with a bunch of jerk-offs. Find a better place.
Jersey is alright. When you grow up here, you learn that if you go somewhere else, it sucks. They say the only place that compares to Jersey is Southern CA. And the people I talked to over there seem to be alright. I dont have a Jersey pride complex, I’m Italian but I hate guidos, and I dont say “Wudder”. Im from Central Jersey, right outside of Trenton. North Jersey is just as horrible as Long Island, and a lot of South Jersey is Billy Bob and Cletus. The positives of NJ? You have NYC no more than 3 hours away, Philly no more than 2 and a half hours away. And a beach of some kind no more than 2 hours away. Then you have one of the only places you can gamble in the US right in the Southern part of the state. The weathers never hot all year or cold all year. Great food.
Peoples complaints?
The people: Yeah I can agree with that, there’s some major d-bags around here. But that’s not everyone.
The “no left turns” or crappy drivers: You learn to drive where you learn to drive. If you learn to drive in NJ, you can drive anywhere. You HAVE to be an asshole on the road.
This states so liberal: I can agree there. But you learn to deal.
Something about nice cars: Yeah…its a big thing here. If you drive a POS, youre obviously not doing well enough for yourself. I’m 19 and I drive a $35K car. I work my ass off to pay for it myself and go to school. You wanna get along in Jersey as a teen, your car does define you when you’re younger.
The people who leave Jersey are the ones who cant handle it. Suck it up or get the hell out.
I grew up in New Jersey and went to Rutgers. I sort of liked the state, sort of didn’t until I lived in Cork, Ireland for a year. Then I realized the great breadth of cultures and environments that my home state contains all connected by a great series of highways and roads. The day I came back I had sushi for lunch, pizza for dinner and got pancakes in the local diner at midnight.
Now I’ve been relishing my time here both around my hometown in Union Co. and around my boyfriend’s in Ocean Co., going to NYC and Philly, going hiking, seeing shows, anything a 20-something would like to do within a 2-hour drive. In August I’ll be moving to New England for graduate school but I’ll be coming home often, and I hope to get my PhD and come right back to teach at Rutgers or Princeton.
If you don’t like New Jersey, or know someone who is a brat/guido/whatever and think we’re all like that, what can I say? Leave the state for people like me who appreciate it.
You can all have this nasty gang infested state. If I had the choice I’d go to any other state. And yes this shit hole is way behind on music. There are a ton of local rock bands in Atlanta that get signed every day and no one here as ever heard of them and radio stations won’t play them b/c they weren’t popular in 1984! I’m not saying there aren’t any smart people here. I’m saying the majority of the people here are stupid or act stupid. The reason Georgia scored a D in education is because you don’t graduate if you don’t learn all the material. They don’t just pass you because you’re old enough to pass, or because you decided to show your face in class once a week!
SilverC :
You can all have this nasty gang infested state.
NASTY GANG INFESTED?! And Atlanta isn’t?! Helloooooooo. There are a ton of local bands here that get signed too. Rock in Atlanta? I dont believe it. Theres two types of music comin out of that place. Rap and Country. Either gangster rappers or hicks. (Im just being a fuck bag since you wanna be a bitch and state shit thats opinion, so theres mine.) And as for the D average. Face it. Georgia is a bunch of dumb rednecks. Top 3 most retarded states in order. West Virgina, Alabama, Georgia. And for the record, NJ has some of the richest neighborhoods and towns in the country.

Looks like all you have is music, which if you took the time to look at the music scene around NJ/Philly/NYC area, you’d see you’re wrong. Cant prove that with numbers though.
So in conclusion, fuckin leave the state if you dont like it. We need less bitches here anyway. Jesus you come off like a cunt. Welcome to Jersey!
Seriously though, jersey isn’t that bad. I’ve lived here my whole life and haven’t found that many issues. Of course, I’m from central jersey, so I’m sort of in the neutral zone. But still, we deserve some credit. You haters need to realize that nj
Isn’t the worst. We’re one of the Most populated states. WHY WOULD SO MANY PEOPLE LIVE HERE IF IT SUCKED SO HARD? Because nj is just like your precious little state. There’s good, and there’s bad. Deal.
heyy. i live in new jersey and i think it’s really great. If you live in a good area, there’s tons to do. There’s beaches, amusement parks, orchards, tons of restaurants, nyc just 1-2 hours away. Everything in New Jersey is great. People here do not say “Wuter.” They say WATER. I’ve lived here my whole life and never heard a person say that. so i like NJ
superior because she came from jersey??? kick that silly twat in the teeth, and let her know that the only thing good that ever came out of jersey was hose kevin smith films that were making fun of jersey.
im from jersey and i absolutely love it here
im proud of being from jersey
obviously if youve visited jersey and you didnt like it you probablly did crappy family bonding shit not anything cool or fun
so fuck jersey haters
we pump our fists not our gas!
The only reason you don’t like it is because most of you have only passed through on the Turnpike (I-95) and I agree, the Turnpike sucks.
But if you spent more time here in nicer places, you’d learn to love it. Lived here my whole life and now that I go to school in NY state, I miss it all the time. I’m so glad to be home now.
If you have lived here and didn’t like it, then you must be from North Jersey. Central is where it’s at.
Nothing, and i mean NOTHING, good comes from the state of New Jersey.
I guess this “go back to Jersey” this is pretty much universal.
I’ve been to jersey. it sucks to be in jersey.
I’m from NJ, and really, it’s the last thing you should be proud of.
@!!!!!
the only true way to survive in jersey is to get out. Trust me, I’ve lived there all my life. *suffocates*
see, this is why south jersey tried to secede in the 70s: from trenton north blows. too many guidos, too much white trash, and too much ‘jer-z’ pride.

i think the Bloodhound Gang summed it pretty nicely in their song
“10 best things about New Jersey”
@Reilly
Don’t forget Menlo Park!
Amen about the North Jersey vs South Jersey. I never saw much of a divide in the state until I started reading these posts.

Check that list…NJ #5. Georgia #36. Ouch. So much for education.
Done.
@CentralNJ
Wow. You summed that up perfectly. “claps”
@bill
superior because she came from jersey??? kick that silly twat in the teeth, and let her know that the only thing good that ever came out of jersey was hose kevin smith films that were making fun of jersey.
im from jersey and i absolutely love it here
im proud of being from jersey
obviously if youve visited jersey and you didnt like it you probablly did crappy family bonding shit not anything cool or fun
so fuck jersey haters
we pump our fists not our gas!
@ vroooooomf
Oh yeah? Ever been to SFGA or Atlantic City? You obviously know nothing about NJ and just judge it from a freaking airport like all the other bennys.
To all you Jersey haters:
The only reason you don’t like it is because most of you have only passed through on the Turnpike (I-95) and I agree, the Turnpike sucks.
But if you spent more time here in nicer places, you’d learn to love it. Lived here my whole life and now that I go to school in NY state, I miss it all the time. I’m so glad to be home now.
If you have lived here and didn’t like it, then you must be from North Jersey. Central is where it’s at.
@ryko
youuuuu got it,
i’m not from jersey, i’m from SOUTH jersey.
